During this project, we went on an investigation on how exactly our food gets to our plates. We studied America and it's relationship with food, which is shockingly sugary and unhealthy. One of the most interesting/traumatizing parts of this project was learning about the meat industry. From this year on, eating Taco Bell isn't part of my moral or health code. We went out into the community to see the in depth process of meat's packaging, from start to finish. This included seeing the cow get slaughtered, cut, and gutted. Without a doubt one of the most impactful field trips I'll ever go on.
I feel that this project was very personalized because of the interdisciplinary nature of it. It was really up to us to decide if and how to immerse ourselves into this project. I learned about myself and how I think about food by applying this projects contents to my everyday life. A documentary we watched in class, Fed Up, pointed out to me just how much sugar we ingest in a single day. In the 'nutrition facts' on the back of food products list the daily percentages of each substance we should be having, but strangely enough, it never says the percentage of sugar.
